Sewage remediation is classified as a Category 3 water loss by the IICRC (Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration S500 Standard). It is defined as being “water which is grossly contaminated and can contain pathogenic, toxigenic or other harmful agents”.
Category 3 water losses result from sewage, contaminated toilet overflows, seawater and ground water which may contain pesticides, organic matter, heavy metals or toxic organic substances. The presence of any of the above could pose a potential health hazard, especially if there are seniors, persons with a compromised immune system, or small children and infants in the home.
It is crucial that homeowners DO NOT attempt to clean or address the structure in the event of a suspected Category 3 water loss. Only a professional who is trained and certified, who follows the protocols set forth by the IICRC S500 Standard should be called to attend the loss area.
